O'Neill, Eugene Gladstone

Крупнейший американский драматург, лауреат Нобелевской премии в области литературы (1936). В молодости был репортером, золотоискателем, матросом; путешествовал, учился в Принстонском [Princeton University] и Гарвардском [Harvard University] университетах. Дебютировал в 1914 сборником "Жажда и другие одноактные пьесы" ["Thirst and Other One Act Plays"]. В 1920 в Нью-Йорке была поставлена его первая многоактная драма "За горизонтом" ["Beyond the Horizon"] - Пулитцеровская премия [Pulitzer Prize]. Вслед за ней он создал большое число реалистических и экспериментальных пьес, которые ломали сценические каноны и положили начало современной драматургии США. Его пьесы, отмеченные тонким психологизмом и глубиной драматических коллизий, вошли в классику мирового театра; среди них: "Император Джонс" ["The Emperor Jones"] (1921), "Анна Кристи" ["Anna Christie"] (1922) - Пулитцеровская премия, "Косматая обезьяна" ["The Hairy Ape"] (1922), "Любовь под вязами" ["Desire Under the Elms"] (1925), "Странная интерлюдия" ["Strange Interlude"] (1928), "Разносчик льда грядет" ["The Iceman Cometh"] (1939), "Долгий день уходит в ночь" ["Long Day's Journey into the Night"] (1941) - Пулитцеровская премия, и др. Многие пьесы О'Нила переведены на русский язык и ставились в ведущих театрах и студиях России
